07 Alaska Highway Pt 2

This update covers our travels from Fort Nelson B.C. to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. This is a distance of 318 miles which we made 3 overnight stops plus 4 in the city of Watson Lake.

img_3585a002.jpg The lodge at Muncho Lake. We were going to have Harry’s birthday dinner here until we saw the menu was al la carte with entrees starting at $36. A bit steep!!

We spent 2 nights here at Muncho Lake, in a provincial park. Just beautiful!! Especially nice was the lack of outboard motors (with a couple of exceptions). Very quiet.

A mineral area where one is supposed to see lots of sheep and other animals. Must have been sleeping!!

Our next stop was Liard River Hotsprings Provinicial Park where we spent the best part of a day and one night. The water was about 104 degrees and sure felt good.

This day we saw some wildlife including a buffalo and first black bear that stood still long enough for a picture.

This is a point overlooking the Liard River where supposedly a bandit gang watched for river boats to rob.

Our next stop was Watson Lake, where we visited 2 notable places. One was The Northern Lights Show which had a planatarium type presentation on the Lights. Interesting. The other site was fun, it was the Signpost Forest. Started by a GI during the construction of The Alaska Highway, it now contains over 64,000 signs.

We had to put up our sign so used an extra license plate (we had 2 on front of truck since one was partially hidden by the spare tire).

That’s it for this leg of our trip. The next installment will finish the Alaska Highway (for the time being) and move us on to the Klondike Highway heading North from Whitehorse.
