17 Glacier Flight

From Denali National Park we drove South to the small town of Talkeenta. This town is a jumping off place for mountain climbers
and other crazies who want to mess around in the snow and ice. We (and Jack Stout) decided to spend a half of our kids’ inheritence to take a flight into the mountains and land on a glacier.

As have so many other places we have visited, Talkeenta was having the art guild fundraiser which is accomplished by having artistic type poeple paint an item (in this case a moose) and they are auctioned off.

This is the plane we flew in. It holds 10 passengers. Note the skis mounted by the wheels. It can be set from the inside so as to land on a runway or on snow.l

There was only one problem. The control to change between wheels and skis was broken. Not a very good start to a bush type filight altho they did get it fixed.

Some of what we saw. Not nearly as exciting as actually being there and seeing it but…

This is not a road; it is the path of a glacier.

This is a seam where two different flows merged together and pushed up the dirt and rocks underneath.

This flight was much like the way it would appear in an Imax movie, up close and personal dodging mountainsides with a bit of turbulence thrown in.
